I'm helping to provide wireless access for a meeting that will not be near any wired or wifi connections. There is a phone, so I could try to find a cheap, no-commitment dial-up provider. Or I could try a fancy schmancy cellular modem that promises broadband connection speeds.
I opted for Cricket broadband cellular access. The device was about $50 and the plan is $40/month, pay as you go with no contract.
Setup under windows 2000 was easy. It created a device in Network Connections with these properties:
- Modem - UTStarcom USB Modem (COM5)
- phone number #777
- max speed 230400
- enable hardware flow control
- enable modem error control
- enable modem compression
- allow PAP protocol
- allow SPAP protocol
- allow CHAP protocol
- allow MS-CHAP protocol
- phone 503-875-6896
- MIN 5032824619
- Home SID 4945
- capabilities 1xEVDO Digital Data, SMS
- using PPP, CHAP
- encryption is optional to connect
- dialup user name 5038756896@mycricket.com
