1980 MB 300TD wagon, 177, miles. $4,100[edit]
http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/car/214723568.html
emailed and heard back. was going to be out of town oct. 7-8, and in no apparent hurry to show car.
That's right, less than 177k miles on the engine and it's converted to run on straight vegetable oil, new or used (have done so for 10k miles). It also runs on biodiesel and/or regular diesel. The body has some rust as it used to live in Virginia. If you're looking for the prettiest car this one will take some work, but if you're looking for a useful car, it's a spacious wagon and runs on free fuel (assuming you're willing to collect used veggie oil from restaurants). It's pretty sweet, but I'm going to Guatemala and I'm not taking a car with me, so I've got to sell her (to you:). Email me with any questions or to set up a time to look at it. Please include a phone number if possible. -Elessar
10/6: Hi Elessar --
I know you are out of town this weekend, but I wonder if we could set up a time to look at your car. Maybe Monday?
Cheers, Julie Day (503-616-3169)
10/23 i realized i'd be out of town too much to sell it so i'm having a friend sell for me. His name is Adrian and i gave him the numbers of people that were interested, but perhaps yours got misplaced. Or perhaps he's taking his time as he's still recovering from falling out of a tree. He can answer the phone okay though so i'd say give him a call at (503)-249-6343. i appologise for the inconvenience! -Elessar

I am selling my 1983 Mercedes 300TD wagon. 290,000 miles. It is fully converted for biodiesel. I have been running B-99 for 3 years. Car runs great. No oil leaks. No problems starting in cold weather. Manual sun roof works and does not leak. All power windows work but power antenna does not work. I am selling only because I am upgrading to a newer MB diesel. This car has been very trouble-free for me. Regularly serviced and maintained. $3,800. 503-892-2960

NON TURBO WAGON but other stats look good -- lower mileage, newer engine and parts
emailed 10/7
Sadly parting with this non turbo wagon. On it's 2nd motor, 178,000 miles, second transmission of 2 years ago. Strong motor, many of those parts that need to be replaced at 20 years of age have been done, such as the drive joints, motor mounts, thermostat, rear brakes, brake master cylinder, fuel tank sender. Many minor repairs have been done. Has good tires and heat, air is not hooked up. One front fender is dented at the very front, plastic piece around the lights on drivers side is broken. This does not affect performance at all. This car has a surprising amount of pick up considering no turbo, my mechanic was impressed, but of course you won't be racing up highway hills. I've added leather seats including a split seat in the rear, for practicality. Has sunroof and cd player. A very lovable car. Run on biodiesel for the last 2 years, but not converted to svo.
10/8 reply:
I have no pictures of this car. The thrill of a nonturbo diesel is that it is a very basic motor that should last a very long time, a workhorse type vehicle. A turbo makes the compression more efficient, so you have more power and less wasted energy, but at the price of higher heat meaning more wear and tear on the rest of the car as the result, and thus the motor may not last as long. If you get a car with a turbo, be sure to let it run a bit each time before you turn it off, to release heat and thus prolong the life of the motor. The turbo will help the diesel to perform like a gas car, the nonturbo takes some getting used to but workd very well. Be sure to change the oil very often if you get any diesel mercedes. Good luck. It turns out I'm needing the car a little longer than I thought, so feel free to check in with me any time- could be days weeks or months, I'm just not sure yet.

10/24 -- Here's his latest pitch on CL: Car has clear title and carfax however, I have found a place on the left inner fender that has been hit and repaired. I don't find it to affect performance or handling, but I am not a bodyman. I bought the car at an auction. I am not a car dealer, just kind of a Mercedes diesel enthusiast. This is one of the better ones out there. If you are a serious buyer you can see the car Friday morning, late afternoon or evening. Sunday evening will also work. I would like to sell the car this weekend, but I cannot accept lowball offers. Thank you and good luck.

Hi there --
Have you had this car up on Craig's List previously this month at a higher price? It looks just like one I viewed ... but if this is different, I'd be interested in seeing it.
How long have you owned it?, and is it a clean title?
Cheers,
Julie Day 503-616-3169
Guy said he just bought it at auction a month ago, so I'd stay clear of it myself. Who knows its history. But he claims it has a good title.
Saw this car near the bus stop in Sellwood. Here's the VIN: WDB AB93A9DN015160
Could not find that VIN on Carfax, which says it was missing a character. Hmm. But this is the same car I viewed on Powell and got a bad-ish feeling about. This guy would be the third person representing this car. Why would the previous owners have sold it at auction? Why would this guy have bought it and then turned around to sell it a month later? It all stinks.

10/23 Hi Ron --
Thanks for your answers. Also, can I ask why you are selling it so soon after buying it? This is indeed the car that I viewed about a month ago, and it was listed on CL for $5,900. So I'm just curious.
Thanks!
Julie
Julie,
I bought the car at an auction. I suppose it's
possible that the dealer I bought it from (or who
knows, the owner before them) tried to sell it for
$5900, didn't get it, and sold it at auction. I
bought it because I am a mercedes diesel mechanic and
I know that these are hard to find in good condition.
The car was last titled in Washington if that helps
confirm that you have seen it before. So to make a
long story short, I am selling the car for
$4200/offer, if you are interested please let me
know.
Thanks,
Ron
butter yellow 1985 Mercedes Benz 300TD Turbo Diesel Wagon!! - $4200[edit]

Emailed query twice, last on Oct 6. Hadn't heard back from first. 10/17 Checked out the car and was beautiful. But back door didn't close properly. Sig at MBI Motors said as a "totalled" car, most people would run from it. It automatically loses 1/4 to 1/3 of the value, and they are hard to sell. So, I sadly withdrew my offer.
Finally selling my first Mercedes, and glad to offer it in great condition for your consideration. I will follow others example on how to present this post, so I will list the positives and negatives so you are fully informed about the condition of this excellent vehicle. A little background, it was in California most of its life and is a recent transplant, it is in great shape for being 20+ years old and has plenty of life left with only 223K miles (and counting). I originally bought it almost a year ago as a long-term investment and was planning on fixing all the details and enjoying it for a long time, but am selling because I've found that a sedan will do what I need and the wagon overkill. Now on to the specifics!
Negative: To be up front, the wagon has a branded title, but the damage was a rear-end and has been repaired-it was this way when I bought it. It is pretty luxurious, has all the bells and whistles, but not all work by this time (one of my reservations was the more stuff there is, the more can go wrong); it still has most of the things working, surprisingly, it's that German engineering, I guess :) The heater core has a small leak that I didn't even notice until a couple months ago-so it's really small. The transmission has a leak that we are currently tracking down to fix-if it sells before it is repaired, I will work with you on the price.
Positive (what you've been waiting for!): Power windows, power door locks, and power mirror all work! It's pretty unusual from what I've found. All the guages work! Engine is awesome, as the 5 cylinder Turbos are known to be-and as an '85 it is the last and best year for the engine (after '85 they went with aluminium heads-ick). Has roof rack and third seat in the back, with all the headrests! Also a very rare thing, evidently. I just replaced an injector, and it needs to be dialed in still, but I'm keeping up on the maintainence and issues until someone does buy it, I can be reasonably flexible on the price because of this, but we are talking about a 20+ year-old luxury vehicle that, all things considered, is in terrific shape-it's not just sitting and rusting away as it has been cared for by all it's owners :) More will follow, please contact me with anything, thanks! :)

Oct 6: Hi there --
I've been eyeing your car on craigslist for a few days now. i just wish you didn't live so far from Portland. I have a 2 year old and making a trip like that would be a bit of a hassle.
Do you ever make it to (or closer) to Portland?
Cheers,
Julie Day
Reply: Yeah, I know it is a distance. That is the reason the price is what it is.
We have a 15 month old, so I can relate to you.
I'll let you know if something develops and I get down there one day.
At this point, the first to show up here with cash...gets it. I haven't had one person show up to see it yet.
I don't have much free time.

One great car, has served me well. Great for Bio Diesel conversion. Clean Title and ready for a new home.
Automatic 4 speed transmission 5 Cyl, Turbo Engine Power Windows All lights work (interior and brakes) Automatic Sunroof CD Player
Has 210K Original miles, Odometer works and runs strong. Mighty great looking and in good shape for a 25 year old car. Does need some work here and there, just changed the water pump and rear axle.
First $2,000 takes her home. Not much for a timeless classic, stylish and over 30 miles a gallon Mercedes!
I am reposting this ad again, since I been quite ill and now slowly recovering, hopefuly one you your guys out there can give her a new home.
