Clean install upgrade from fedora 16 to fedora 17

  • backup home
  • backup etc
  • capture list of packages
  • Install and reformat

The install from USB stick went really fast.

Then reboot and create ryan.day user. Run yum update.

Install packages

  • terminator (set focus follows mouse)
  • thunderbird
  • mail archive in .thunderbird/<profile>/Mail/Local Folders (1.2GB)
  • thunderbird add-ons: exchange 2007/2010 calendar
    • google calendar tab
    • lightning
    • google-contacts
  • thunderbird address book: nwea ldap, gmail contacts
  • gnome shell extension system monitor
  • autofs
  • setup thunderbird account info (home, gmail, nwea)
  • vpn, vpnc package already installed
  • pidgin, pidgin-sipe
  • tuned (activate powersave profile)
  • ssh keys
  • /etc/hosts
  • chrome
  • google-talk-plugin for chrome
  • google-earth (64bit version needs redhat-lsb.i686, boo) skipping

I don't want a million 32bit libraries installed. this will have to go in a separate vm

  • gramps
  • calibre
  • wine
  • firefox plugins: firebug, liveheaders, noscript
  • yum install @virtualization
  • winetricks

  • set up static routes in VPN for confluence, teamtrack, etc

In-place ugpgrade from fedora 17 to fedora 18

  • fedup to get all packages and dependencies
  • reboot
  • done!

Smoothest upgrade ever.

Fresh install of fedora 18 on new Dell E6330

Install from USB stick handed out at Redhat Summit. Super fast. This is my first exposure to the new installer.

  • copy /home from old laptop
  • install thunderbird and restore by copying .thunderbird folder into place
  • setup VPN (copy static routes
  • configure DNS in networkmanager dhcp client
  • install gnome-tweak-tool, set focus follows mouse
  • install gnome extensions, system monitor
  • install pidgin, pidgin-sipe
  • autofs
  • tuned, powersave profile
  • /etc/hosts (add bash01)

fedup in-place upgrade from 18 to 19

  • like butter.
  • se linux denied some ldconfig post-install steps... weird, but no blood, no foul
