Clean install upgrade from fedora 16 to fedora 17

  • backup home
  • backup etc
  • capture list of packages
  • Install and reformat

The install from USB stick went really fast.

Then reboot and create ryan.day user. Run yum update.

Install packages

  • terminator (set focus follows mouse)
  • thunderbird
  • gnome shell extension system monitor
  • autofs
  • setup thunderbird account info (home, gmail, nwea)
  • vpn, vpnc package already installed
  • pidgin, pidgin-sipe
  • tuned (activate powersave profile)
  • ssh keys
  • /etc/hosts
  • chrome
  • google-talk-plugin for chrome
  • google-earth (64bit version needs redhat-lsb.i686, boo) skipping
 I don't want a million 32bit libraries installed. 
 this will have to go in a separate vm
  • gramps
  • mail archive in .thunderbird/<profile>/Mail/Local Folders (1.2GB)
  • thunderbird add-ons: exchange 2007/2010 calendar
 google calendar tab
 lightning
 google-contacts
  • calibre
  • thunderbird address book: nwea ldap, gmail contacts
  • wine
  • firefox plugins: firebug, liveheaders, noscript
  • yum install @virtualization
  • winetricks
  • wow
  • concord
  • git
  • gimp
  • rdesktop
  • strace
  • sysstat
  • postgresql
  • oracle java sdk (web start jnlp)
  • iptraf
  • bash-completion
  • vlc (rpmfusion repo)
  • printers through cups
  • sound (fixed by upgrade)
  • set startup programs (gnome-session-properties: remember running apps on logout)
  • set up static routes in VPN for confluence, teamtrack, etc

In-place ugpgrade from fedora 17 to fedora 18
  • fedup to get all packages and dependencies
  • reboot
  • done!
Smoothest upgrade ever.
