I just got a SMCWSKP100. I thought I was just getting a cell phone replacement, but it sounds like a Polish diplomat. And you need to know that name to get the support information for the phone from the terribly slow SMC website. Anyway, it is a device that lets you make VOIP calls from any free wifi hotspot. Which is free through skype until the end of 2006 at which point it reverts back to the rate of about .021 cents per minute. As opposed to the .450 cents per minute that Cingular charges.

More later about pros and cons…

free skype runs out in December

Rday 18:03, 11 August 2008 (PDT) I'm now using this phone as our main house telephone. But that's only because the kids dropped the last skype phone twice too many times.

Now I'm thinking about buying this as a home phone: http://ge.factoryoutletstore.com/details/3507-4262/General-Electric-RCA-VOIP-Skype-Phones-28310EE1.html home phone

Plus an extra handset since they have those now and it would be nice to have one upstairs.

While I'm shopping, I need to get cable ties, a linux USB audio dongle, and more mice.
